Gulf Coast Actions:  Pray and Advocate

As people of faith, we are called to stand by those suffering from the oil disaster, sharing in their sorrow and demanding just and comprehensive action from our policymakers. Join together as a collective community with our fellow brothers and sisters in the Gulf Coast Region to focus our hearts and minds on this tragedy.

Pray

Join Bayou Interfaith Shared Community Organizing (BISCO) and other faith groups across the nation for a Day of Prayer on July 30 (or the weekend before or after that date.) Pray for the communities affected by the disaster; for the ecosystems stressed and devastated; for a just and comprehensive response from our elected officials as they react to this tragedy.

There are many ways you can do this:

·        Hold a special prayer service within your church community to focus on this disaster

·        Offer an intercession for Gulf Coast communities during a church service

·        Gather a group within your church to join for a time of prayer

·        Invite your friends to pray with you

·        Reflect and pray individually

Advocate

Call and email your Senators and Representative.  Tell them to:

·        Work with stakeholders

·        Hold responsible parties accountable

·        Ensure that help reaches those in need

·        Commit to a long-term recovery

·        Take steps to prevent future disasters

·        Respond to yet-unknown needs
